Tips when making a job transition

Finding your passion. Achieving financial freedom. Having a more fulfilling career. These are the words that often encourage us that there is more to what we currently do. They urge us to believe that we can find that perfect place where we can suddenly bloom and be happy, almost like magic, if only we can have the courage to drop our meaningless boring day jobs that keep our families fed and our roofs over our head. Too good to be true? An illusion? Certainly not! Yet rare also are the people who can suddenly drop everything they currently depend on and surrender by faith to a Higher Power who will provide them with everything they need.

For most of us, achieving such things require a transition, a transition not only of our external frameworks but of our inner being. And if we are not careful enough, we’d find out that we’ve suddenly thrown everything away in exchange for frustrations we can’t grapple with considering our current faith and strength.

Before you make that all too important decision of leaving your current job and following your heart’s desire, consider the following:

1.A Back-Up Plan

Do you have a back up plan in case your original plan doesn’t work? Sure, you’d say you’re optimistic enough. But will you still be able to stay that optimistic when everything starts to fall away from the way you envisioned it? Consider a Plan B, and if possible, a Plan C. This would give you greater confidence into doing what you set out to do.

2.People Who Depend on You

Are there people who currently depend on you for a living? Do you have children or parents who depend upon you for support? Ask yourself if you’re already prepared to let them go or to let them down the moment you start to make goals for yourself. If letting them down gets you frustrated, you’d have a lot more burden upon your shoulder than you currently have. See if you can prepare them for independence before you strive for your own plans.

3.Your Real Goal

Before you try to drop everything else, ask yourself what your real goal is. Do you really feel unfulfilled because of the nature of the job or is it because you feel you are not being compensated enough? Do you really know what your passion is or are you just jumping into the current stream of people who seem to be happier than you are today? Maybe your real goal today is just to raise a family and your current job is enough to support you on this dream. Maybe its not the dissatisfaction with the nature of your job, but your irritation with some of the people you work with. Could this be a mere lesson on tolerance or acceptance? Know your real problem and define your real goal.

4.You Vision

What is your real vision for your life and your loved ones? Are you leaving your job because you can’t stand it any longer or because you have found a different vision worth pursuing? Think many times and think deeply of this question “Where would you go?” If you can’t answer that yet, maybe it’s not yet the time to move on. You can’t go anywhere unless you know where you’re going to. You may just plunge yourself deeper into depression when you find yourself doing nothing and with nowhere to go.

5.Your Strength and Maturity

Are you strong enough to start anew? Are you ready to let go of your comfort zone? Remember that it wasn’t referred to as a “comfort zone” for nothing. It was comfortable to you because you’ve established your routine and support where you are. Leaving it is no easy matter, but it can be done when you feel that you have already outgrown the place and you believe you already have the strength and the maturity to tackle new challenges in life. If you are not ready yet, stay in your comfort zone until you are.

Some people however have become so frustrated where they are that the place they’re working at can no longer be a comfort to them. In fact, if they stay there a minute longer, they would plunge themselves into a frustration that can’t easily be reversed. If that is the case however, it is advisable to leave, to seek rest and to renew one’s strength. Seek healing, and then seek your true desires.
