Someone just asked me if I’m still single. He commented that it would be better if I could bear a child and spread my genes, make more smart and beautiful people!
Well, it’s good to know that he thinks it would be good if many more people inherit my good traits through my genes. Talk about evolution of the species, huh. I’d have no objections to that.
But I came to realize deep within me that there are other ways by which I could leave behind a good legacy other than by passing on my genetic code.
Bearing a child is not the only way to contribute something to life (especially if you can’t raise that child up to become the best kind of person she’s meant to be).
You can bear other children begotten not only by your flesh, but by your spirit, by your heart.

Hi Joyce, I like the end of your article : “You can bear other children begotten not only by your flesh, but by your spirit, by your heart.”
I am agree that the most important is spirit and heart.
Great post, Joyce.

I definitely agree that having a child is not the be-all or end-all of life. Whether or not to have a child is very much a personal choice. Like you’ve correctly said, there are many ways to contribute to society.

Jocelyn–
I am right there with you. I am 35, have 3 stepkids (very part-time), and don’t want to have my own kids. I feel that my life’s work is through other avenues, though it is at times difficult to convey this to people, if you know what i mean. Great blog!

Thanks for this post. I like seeing people take seriously the issue of whether they think it would serve them, or their future children, to have kids. It seems that, to many people, it’s obvious that you “should” have kids because “that’s just what people are supposed to do,” and I know many people who unfortunately caused themselves a lot of suffering by buying into this way of thinking.
Certainly you are right in that there are many ways to influence and shape our world other than having children. Bearing spiritual children is a great example as well as simply serving others and doing as Ghandi said “Be the change you wish to see in the world” . Great article, thank you.

From a blog in support of the “Prize Maria Amelia Lopez Solino” to the best blog written by a senior citizen, we appreciate the kind comments of condolence left on her blog and encourage you to encourage older people to follow their example.
Faithfully.
We apologize for our bad English!
Hi Jocelyn .. children happen or they don’t - but your idea of moulding others and leaving your stamp on the world is what we do all the time .. whether with our children or with others .. leaving a peaceful imprint would be good.
Thanks - good post and ideas ..

i don’t like the thought that everyone should procreate, but you can take his words for the compliment that it was.
there are other ways to make an impact on society and the lives of others. there’s no guarantee your child will turn out the way you want. it’s hard work raising children.
I love your thoughts on this. Yes there are many ways to leave a legacy and impact this world and you so everyday!

Absolutely! I couldn’t agree with you more. It’s like he’s discounting anyone that’s not a parent.
