Your Life Matters

Don’t tell me there’s nothing extraordinary in the life you’re living. Your life is special just because you are in it. Remember always how precious you are in God’s sight.

“Don’t be afraid, for I have redeemed you.
I have called you by your name.
You are mine.”
-Isaiah 43, WEBBE

An Ordinary Life

There are many times when I wondered,
Is there anything special about my ordinary life?
What’s the point of everything?
Where is it all going?
Am I supposed to be doing something
That could make my life worthwhile?

What does it matter that I live?
Who would even notice?
In a world with seven billion souls
Why would it matter
That I am still alive?

Yet you tell me
That my life matters
And that when I’m gone
I would be terribly missed.

You tell me
That you see something in me
That you could never see
In a hundred billion souls.

And somehow,
When I look into your eyes
I believe you,
And I start to realize
How precious one life can really be.

I did no great thing,
I experienced no terrible tragedy,
But you made me feel grateful
For every precious moment I have been alive.

Because of you, I have come to believe
And now I know
What wonders there could be
In this blessed and ordinary life.

To Love More

Love will always require more than we think we ought to give. It will always require more patience, more gentleness, more courage, more faith, and more hope. And to continue loving, we need to draw more strength than we could ever think or imagine. Love requires all because it also gives all. Love will always give more and in the end, true love can never fail.

Love Is More

Love is not love only
When it is seen
Or heard
Or touched.

Love is not love only
When it is remembered,
When it is received
And appreciated
In warmth.

For love is more love
When it is given
In secret,
When it is rendered
Where it is thought
It could never be found.

Love is more love
When it quietly serves
And persistently gives
And gives and gives,
Even when ignored
Even where it seems
To bear no fruit
And all is
Painful
And wearisome
And dark.

Such is love indeed,
Such is true love.
Love survives the darkest night
And though it passes
Through the valley of the shadow of death,
Love endures and conquers and lives.

“But when you do merciful deeds, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand does, so that your merciful deeds may be in secret, then your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.” – Matthew 6, WEBBE

Time To Listen

We can avoid a lot of trouble if we try to listen even when we think we already understand.

So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger… – James 1:19, WEBBE

When someone tells you you’re not listening, it may be time to pause because that person may have a point. We may not have noticed it, but we may have failed to really listen. We may have kept on talking while the other person was saying something. We may have concluded that we perfectly understood what the other person was saying so we just didn’t let them finish talking.

Even if we thought we already knew better, let us try to give other people the chance to give their piece. Learning to listen says so much about our humility, our respect for the other and our true desire to understand other people.

When God Delays

God is never too late even when we think that He delays.

Now while the bridegroom delayed, they all slumbered and slept. But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Behold! The bridegroom is coming! Come out to meet him!’ … Watch therefore, for you don’t know the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming. – Matthew 25:5-6, 13 (WEBBE)

We never doubt God’s presence more than when He seems to delay His answers. After waiting for very long, and all we could see is the situation merely becoming worse, we tend to doubt His goodness. Sometimes, we even doubt His very existence! Is He really there? Does He really watch over me? And if He does, does He not see my suffering? Does He not care?

We may not fully understand His reasons for now, but let us trust that whatever it may be, it isn’t because He doesn’t care about us. In fact, He cares far more about us than we could ever realize!

When God delays, He delays for our own good. He may be preparing us for the blessing we ask or He is preparing us for even greater things.

God doesn’t really delay, we just think He does. But God is always on time, and in His time, we receive the fullness of His mercy and His love.

And though He delayeth His help, and the evil seemeth to grow worse and worse, be not weak, but rather strong, and rejoice, since the most glorious promises of God are generally fulfilled in such a wondrous manner that He steps forth to save us at a time when there is the least appearance of it. – Streams in the Desert

Compassion For The Wicked

It is easy to have compassion for our friends, but to have compassion even for our enemies, that is the true test of our faith!

How can we have any sympathy for those who are wicked? What is there to love or to look kindly at? Many times, it’s so difficult to avoid hatred because we do not know how to even start to love.

Jesus Himself, when He was crucified, taught us one way by praying for those who know not what they do. Pray for people who are not aware of what they are doing, and of how gravely they are hurting others and ruining their own souls.

Further, no matter how evil a person appears to be, no matter how marred the image of goodness in his soul appears to be, we have to believe that as long as he lives, there is hope that he may change, that there is still that little spark of God’s light within him that can make it possible for him to be good, to love, to repent of all the wrong things he has done.

And for those who eventually will not repent, it is all the more that we should pity them for the torment and despair they will bear for all eternity. There is no way that a person can escape God’s strict justice unless he turns to His mercy. And if he does not, whatever has he profited from all his earthly deeds if he will soon fall into the abyss of eternal suffering and the loss of God? By his crimes, he has not only killed the body of his neighbor, but in doing so, he has also killed his own soul!

Last of all, never assume he is truly happy. For the one who sins is not on his way to life, light and everything that is good. All of his pleasures are but momentary, and even these are shallow and he is never truly happy and at peace. Only he who sees God can ever be truly joyous and no one can see God unless his heart be pure.

Think therefore of the following:
-Think of your enemy’s ignorance.
-Think of your enemy’s future repentance.
-Think of your enemy’s future suffering.
-Think of the happiness your enemy has lost.

But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing back; and your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High; for he is kind toward the unthankful and evil. Therefore be merciful, even as your Father is also merciful.
Don’t judge, and you won’t be judged. Don’t condemn, and you won’t be condemned. Set free, and you will be set free.
– Luke 6:35-37 (WEB)

“If we could read the secret history of our enemies, we should find in each man’s life sorrow and suffering enough to disarm all hostility.” – Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
