Bible Verses on Judging Others

judgenothing

“Don’t judge, so that you won’t be judged. For with whatever judgement you judge, you will be judged; and with whatever measure you measure, it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but don’t consider the beam that is in your own eye? Or how will you tell your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye;’ and behold, the beam is in your own eye? You hypocrite! First remove the beam out of your own eye, and then you can see clearly to remove the speck out of your brother’s eye. – Matthew 7:1-5, WEB-BE

Don’t speak against one another, brothers. He who speaks against a brother and judges his brother, speaks against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law, but a judge. Only one is the lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge another? – James 4:11-12, WEB-BE

Jesus answered them, “I did one work, and you all marvel because of it. Moses has given you circumcision (not that it is of Moses, but of the fathers), and on the Sabbath you circumcise a boy. If a boy receives circumcision on the Sabbath, that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me, because I made a man completely healthy on the Sabbath? Don’t judge according to appearance, but judge righteous judgement.” – John 7:21-24, WEB-BE

Therefore you are without excuse, O man, whoever you are who judge. For in that which you judge another, you condemn yourself. For you who judge practise the same things. We know that the judgement of God is according to truth against those who practise such things. Do you think this, O man who judges those who practise such things, and do the same, that you will escape the judgement of God? – Romans 2:1-3, WEB-BE

“Teacher, we found this woman in adultery, in the very act. Now in our law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. What then do you say about her?” They said this testing him, that they might have something to accuse him of. But Jesus stooped down, and wrote on the ground with his finger. But when they continued asking him, he looked up and said to them, “He who is without sin amongst you, let him throw the first stone at her.” – John 8:4-7, WEB-BE

But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you, or by man’s judgment. Yes, I don’t judge my own self. For I know nothing against myself. Yet I am not justified by this, but he who judges me is the Lord. Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and reveal the counsels of the hearts. Then each man will get his praise from God. – 1 Corinthians 4:3-5, WEB-BE

Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. – Luke 6:37, DRB

But the LORD said to Samuel, “Don’t look on his face, or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for I don’t see as man sees. For man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” – 1 Samuel 16:7, WEB-BE

Quotes About Judging Others

“If you judge people, you have no time to love them.”- Mother Teresa

“And it is the Lord, it is Jesus, Who is my judge. Therefore I will try always to think leniently of others, that He may judge me leniently, or rather not at all, since He says: “Judge not, and ye shall not be judged.”- Thérèse de Lisieux, Story of a Soul

“As long as we continue to live as if we are what we do, what we have, and what other people think about us, we will remain filled with judgments, opinions, evaluations, and condemnations. We will remain addicted to putting people and things in their “right” place.”- Henri J.M. Nouwen

“How would your life be different if…You stopped making negative judgmental assumptions about people you encounter? Let today be the day…You look for the good in everyone you meet and respect their journey.”- Steve Maraboli, Life, the Truth, and Being Free

If one has the answer to all the questions – that is the proof that God is not with him. It means that he is a false prophet using religion for himself. The great leaders of the people of God, like Moses, have always left room for doubt. You must leave room for the Lord, not for our certainties; we must be humble. – Pope Francis

“By judging others we blind ourselves to our own evil and to the grace which others are just as entitled to as we are.”- Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of Discipleship

“Our job is to love others without stopping to inquire whether or not they are worthy. That is not our business and, in fact, it is nobody’s business. What we are asked to do is to love, and this love itself will render both ourselves and our neighbors worthy.”- Thomas Merton

“The most important thing in communication is hearing what isn’t being said. The art of reading between the lines is a life long quest of the wise.”- Shannon L. Alder

“If someone isn’t what others want them to be, the others become angry. Everyone seems to have a clear idea of how other people should lead their lives, but none about his or her own.” – Paulo Coelho

Perhaps, if you weren’t so busy regarding my shortcomings, you’d find that I do possess redeeming qualities, discreet as they may be. I notice when the sky is blue. I smile down at children. I laugh at any innocent attempt at humor. I quietly carry the burdens of others as though they were my own. And I say ‘I’m sorry’ when you don’t. I am not without fault, but I am not without goodness either.”- Richelle E. Goodrich, Smile Anyway: Quotes, Verse, & Grumblings for Every Day of the Year

“Beware, so long as you live, of judging men by their outward appearance.” -Jean de La Fontaine

“None of us has ever seen a motive. Therefore, we don’t know we can’t do anything more than suspect what inspires the action of another. For this good and valid reason, we’re told not to judge. Tragedy is that our attention centers on what people are not, rather than on what they are and who they might become.”- Brennan Manning, The Wisdom of Tenderness: What Happens When God’s Fierce Mercy Transforms Our Lives

Judge tenderly, if you must. There is usually a side you have not heard, a story you know nothing about, and a battle waged that you are not having to fight.”- Traci Lea LaRussa

“The beginning of love is the will to let those we love be perfectly themselves, the resolution not to twist them to fit our own image.”- Thomas Merton

“Criticism of others is thus an oblique form of self-commendation. We think we make the picture hang straight on our wall by telling our neighbors that all his pictures are crooked.”- Fulton J. Sheen

Those who are quick to censure may be very acute in judgment, but they are as yet very immature in heart. He who grows in grace remembers that he is but dust, and he therefore does not expect his fellow Christians to be anything more; he overlooks ten thousand of their faults, because he knows his God overlooks twenty thousand in his own case. He does not expect perfection in the creature, and, therefore, he is not disappointed when he does not find it. … I know we who are young beginners in grace think ourselves qualified to reform the whole Christian church. We drag her before us, and condemn her straightway; but when our virtues become more mature, I trust we shall not be more tolerant of evil, but we shall be more tolerant of infirmity, more hopeful for the people of God, and certainly less arrogant in our criticisms.”- Charles H. Spurgeon

Judge Not So Quickly

judgenotext

“Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned.” – Luke 6:37, DRB

To refrain from judging other people is not to stop trying to discern or to see things wisely. It is not to refrain from trying to know what is right and what is wrong.

Rather, to refrain from judging others is to prevent forming untimely conclusions. It is to avoid thinking that we already know everything when in so many cases, we know not much at all.

We must stop judging from the external alone because there is so much that we do not see. We must stop judging from our experiences alone because there is so much that we do not yet understand.

How can we say that we already know everything about another person when there is so much that we don’t even know yet about ourselves?

How can we conclude that a person’s life would never change for the better when we can’t even guarantee that our lives won’t change for the worse?

Instead of seeing ourselves as all-knowing and all-seeing, let us humble ourselves and acknowledge our own smallness. Instead of quickly judging by mere appearances, let us ask God to help us see from the heart.

Judge not prematurely. Give others some benefit of doubt. Only God knows all things and all that could ever happen.

Our Silent Testimony

silenttestimony2

“Your actions speak so loudly, I cannot hear what you are saying.”- Ralph Waldo Emerson

Sometimes, it is the silent testimony of one’s life that speaks the loudest. It is not the words we say or preach; it is how we live our lives and how we live out what we are trying to preach.

Words sometimes evoke defensiveness upon those who hear. We wanted to say something, but they hear something else. Instead of hearing our love, they hear our rejection. Instead of hearing encouragement, they hear our judgment.

When words are seen as an offense, our silence could be tangible signs of acceptance and understanding. By our mere presence, we can communicate our desire to help. By our smile we can convey our friendship.

Even when we are misunderstood, our silence can mean a lot. Through our silent suffering, we are able to communicate our patience. Through our tears, we allow outbursts of anger to flow as sorrow borne for those we love.

“It’s better to cry than to be angry because anger hurts others while tears flow through the soul and cleanses the heart.” – Pope John Paul II.

In the same way, wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; so that, even if any don’t obey the Word, they may be won by the behaviour of their wives without a word… – 1 Peter 3:1,WEB-BE

Mary teaches by silence, leads by obedience and conquers by humility.

Love of God Quotes

love of god quotes

These “Love of God Quotes” can help strengthen your faith in God’s great love for you. He loves you and there is no other who can ever love you as God loves you.

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbour as yourself.” – Luke 10:27, WEB-BE

To love God above all does not mean that we love our neighbors less. When we put God above all else, we are able to love our neighbors more. We no longer love them for what they can give to us or for what they can do. We no longer love them because of our own selfish interests, but because of the love we have received from God. Through God, our love is purified; it becomes a holy and healing love. It is not a love that aims merely to please others. It is not a love concerned with temporary comfort or pleasures. But it is a love that desires what is truly good for all. It is a love that is tender, and it is a love that is courageous and strong! It does not depend on men’s praise or approval. It does not fade with difficulties or trials. Rather, it is a love that endures, a love that gives true joy, a love that saves.

“To fall in love with God is the greatest romance; to seek him the greatest adventure; to find him, the greatest human achievement.” – Augustine of Hippo

Let these “Love of God Quotes” inspire you today:

“Take God for your spouse and friend and walk with him continually, and you will not sin and will learn to love, and the things you must do will work out prosperously for you.” – St. John of the Cross

“God loves each of us as if there were only one of us.” – Augustine

“How did Jesus love us? He became living bread that you and I might eat, that we might live. He became so small and so weak in order to meet our hunger for God. Bread, just bread, the simplest of all food to the point that even a child can eat it and understand it.” – Mother Teresa, Heart of Joy

“If all were to know how beautiful Jesus is and how loving He is! They would all die of love. And yet, how is it that He is so little loved?” – St. Gemma Galgani

“Because God has made us for Himself, our hearts are restless until they rest in Him.” – Augustine of Hippo

“O guiding night!
O night more lovely than the dawn!
O night that has united
the Lover with his beloved,
transforming the beloved in her Lover…
I abandoned and forgot myself,
laying my face on my Beloved;
all things ceased; I went out from myself,
leaving my cares
forgotten among the lilies.”
-St. John of the Cross

“I want to give myself to souls and to fill them with My love, but few there are who want to accept all the graces My love has intended for them.”- Jesus to St. Faustina, Divine Mercy In My Soul

“If you want to love me with your whole heart and to desire nothing but me, I will draw you to me through charity, just like a magnet or lodestone draws iron to itself. I will lay you on my arm, which is so strong that no one can stretch it out and so rigid that no one can bend it back once outstretched. It is so sweet that it surpasses every fragrance and cannot be compared with the delights of this world.” – Revelations to St. Bridget

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only born Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.” – John 3:16, WEBBE

“It seems to me that if everyone were to receive such favours God would be feared by
none, but loved to excess; that no one would ever commit the least wilful fault—and this
through love, not fear.” – St. Therese of Lisieux

“The glory of heaven consists in seeing and loving God face-to-face… She shall see that all the tribulations, the poverty, infirmities, and persecutions, which she regards as misfortunes, have all proceeded from love, and have been the means employed by divine providence to bring her to glory.” – St. Alphonsus

“He treated sinners with a kindness and affection that caused some to be shocked, others to be scandalized and still others to hope for God’s mercy. And so he bade us to be gentle and humble of heart.” – Saint John Bosco from a letter

“Man is, of all creatures, beloved of God. God created man, and before creating him He thought of him, loved him. This is our treasure: God has loved us, He has created us in love, and because He loves us He wants to draw us back to Himself.” – Marie-Eugene of the Child Jesus, OCD (Where the Spirit Breathes)

“I am thirsty, said Jesus on the cross… His thirst was not for water but for love.” – Mother Teresa, Heart of Joy

“Who except God can give you peace? Has the world ever been able to satisfy the heart?” – Saint Gerard Majella

“Go forth in peace, for you have followed the good road. Go forth without fear, for he who created you has made you holy, has always protected you, and loves you as a mother. Blessed be you, my God, for having created me.”- St. Clare of Assisi

“There is no need to be dismayed if love sometimes follows torturous ways. Grace has the power to make straight the paths of human love.” – Pope John Paul II

you wake in my heart,
where in secret you dwell alone;
and in your sweet breathing,
filled with good and glory,
how tenderly you swell my heart with love.”
-St. John of the Cross

“Who do you want to love, if you do not want to love Jesus?” – St. Gemma Galgani

“I will betroth you to me forever. Yes, I will betroth you to me in righteousness, in justice, in loving kindness, and in compassion.” – Hosea 2:19, WEBBE

“God’s passionate love for his people—for humanity—is at the same time a forgiving love. It is so great that it turns God against himself, his love against his justice. Here Christians can see a dim prefigurement of the mystery of the Cross: so great is God’s love for man that by becoming man he follows him even into death, and so reconciles justice and love.” – Deus Caritas Est-Encyclical Letter, Benedict XVI

“It is not because I have been preserved from mortal sin that I lift up my heart to God in trust and love. I feel that even had I on my conscience every crime one could commit, I should lose nothing of my confidence: my heart broken with sorrow, I would throw myself into the Arms of my Saviour. I know that He loves the Prodigal Son, I have heard His words to St. Mary Magdalen, to the woman taken in adultery, and to the woman of Samaria. No one could frighten me, for I know what to believe concerning His Mercy and His Love. And I know that all that multitude of sins would disappear in an instant, even as a drop of water cast into a flaming furnace.” – St. Therese of Lisieux

“Why did you suffer for me, dear Jesus? For love! The nails…the crown…the cross…all for the love of me! For You I sacrifice everything willingly. I offer You my body with all of its weakness, and my soul with all its love.” – St. Gemma Galgani
