Day 1: The Promise of a Saviour (Christmas Devotional)

Bible Verse:
“I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will bruise your head, and you will bruise his heel.”
Genesis 3:15 (WEBBE)

Reflection:
The very first promise of a Saviour is found in Genesis 3:15, often called the “Protoevangelium,” or the first gospel. After the fall of humanity, when sin entered the world through Adam and Eve’s disobedience, God immediately declared His plan to redeem and restore. This verse speaks of the ongoing battle between the forces of evil and the offspring of the woman, but it also contains the first hint of victory—though the serpent (representing Satan) would strike the heel of the woman’s offspring, that offspring would ultimately crush the serpent’s head.

This promise foreshadows the coming of Jesus Christ, the ultimate offspring who would defeat sin and death through His own suffering, death, and resurrection. In this way, Genesis 3:15 sets the stage for the entire story of salvation, reminding us that from the very beginning, God had a plan to save us.

As we begin this journey through the Advent season, let us remember that Christmas is the fulfillment of this ancient promise. The birth of Jesus is the dawn of hope for a world in need of redemption. No matter how dark the world may seem, we can hold fast to the assurance that God’s plan to save us was in motion from the very beginning, and it finds its fulfillment in Christ.

Prayer:
Lord, as we enter this season of Advent, help us to remember Your ancient promise of a Saviour. Thank You for Your love and for planning our redemption from the very beginning. Open our hearts to the hope that comes through Jesus Christ, and let us live in the light of that promise each day. Amen.
