Day 5: Near to the Brokenhearted (Devotional for the Sick)

Bible Verse:
“The LORD is close to the brokenhearted, saves those whose spirit is crushed.”
Psalm 34:19 (NABRE)

Reflection:
There are times in life when the weight of suffering feels almost unbearable, when our hearts are broken, and our spirits are crushed by pain or despair. In such moments, it’s easy to feel isolated, as if no one truly understands the depth of our sorrow. Yet, the psalmist offers a powerful reassurance: God is near to the brokenhearted.

This verse reminds us that our suffering does not go unnoticed by God. He is not distant or indifferent to our pain; rather, He draws close to us in our most vulnerable moments. His presence brings comfort, even when words fail to ease our hurt. Knowing that God is near can be a source of great strength and hope, particularly when we feel overwhelmed by our circumstances.

God’s nearness is also an invitation to bring our brokenness to Him. In His presence, there is healing for our deepest wounds and restoration for our crushed spirits. He doesn’t merely sympathize with our pain—He actively works to save and redeem us from it.

As you reflect on this verse, allow yourself to be honest with God about your pain and struggles. Trust that He is near, ready to comfort and heal. In His embrace, you can find the strength to endure and the hope to carry on.

Prayer:
Loving God, You see the brokenness in my heart, and You understand the weight of my sorrow. Thank You for being near to me, even when I feel most alone. Help me to trust in Your comforting presence and to find healing in Your love. Restore my spirit and give me the strength to face each day with renewed hope. Amen.

When everything’s going well, we hardly notice it’s there. But when things go against us, when our dreams fade and when we see no immediate reprieve from our troubles, that’s when hope does its best work for us.
