The Things We Leave Behind

As we grow older, we think more and more about the things we leave behind.  What would our legacy be?  What would the new generation learn from us?  Today, I’d like to share with you a letter I would have written for my own child.  After that, I’d also like to share with you a poem about the things we look forward to in different stages in our lives.

A Letter To a Child

Dear child, remember that in this world, not everything would work out the way you wanted to. In fact, most things would be flawed and far from ideal. Many things would bring you pain.

This is not to discourage you or to keep you from dreaming great things. But you need to know these things so you can be brave and so that you may not be easily dismayed.

You need to keep your feet firmly planted on the ground like a tree that will never be shaken by the strongest wind. But you need to keep your gaze up to heaven so you may never forget where you will one day take flight to your true home.

What Do We Look Forward To?

When we were kids,
we looked forward to growing up.
When we were teenagers,
we looked forward to finishing our studies.
When we were young adults,
we looked forward to getting a job.
When we were finally stable,
we looked forward to getting married.
When we got married,
we looked forward to having kids.
When we had kids,
we looked forward to seeing them grow up.
And so the cycle goes….

But what if we stopped
somewhere

when we were adults,
thinking about what life really means,
what a life that matters really is
and what we’d really like to do,
will the cycle stop?
Shall we move on to another circle?
